You can't be alone, even when you try!
Ever felt alone? This piece is a good read!
I am that type of person who enjoys watching the behind-the-scenes video clips of most of my favorite movies. The very first few times I did so, I was amazed at the large number of people on every set, that we don't even ever get to see in front of the camera.
Imagine with me a given part of a movie where the actor is alone, behind closed doors, maybe sobbing, or sleeping or dancing, but with no one else watching him/her.
When you watch that scene, you can only see one person on your TV screen, you can only see that actor sobbing or dancing or doing whatever, yet when you get a chance to watch the behind-the-scenes clip of that particular scene, you will be amazed that there were at the very least five people: the director, a camera guy, the guy holding the long microphone and then the actor.
With this habit of watching the behind-the-scenes video clips of my favorite movies, these days even before I watch the video clips, I usually can't help but think about what might have gone on behind the scenes, how many people it might have taken to capture a given scene or camera trick. You see one person but there are actually more than five people involved.
Likewise, you are never alone, even if you really wanted to be; you just can't be alone.
The devil is near you (1 Peter 5:8-9), the Holy Spirit is in and with you (1 Corinthians 3:16), God is near you, at your right hand (Psalm 121); there are angels concerning you (Psalm 91:11-12) and you also have a GREAT cloud of witnesses watching you (Hebrews 12:1).
Meaning that it'd be quite fair of me to say that when you feel lonely, you actually have about at the very least five beings around you. So, you can never be alone, even if you wanted to. Just like you watch a movie and see one person in the scene, even though about five other people's efforts are at work in real time just for the sake of that seemingly simple scene, the same way we need to choose which point of view to set our minds on: one that tries to convince you that you are alone (the movie scene in our example), or the other that says you have a great cloud of witnesses (the on-ground reality that's happening behind the scenes).
Always remembering that we are never alone has tremendous benefits in our Christian walk, and a few are as follows:
It helps you overcome sin.
You know how we sin and end up saying the devil tempted us? The devil sometimes puts us in a corner and makes us feel like we are all alone with him and we have run out of choices.
Reminding myself of the truth that I am never alone has helped me greatly in times of temptation, before I choose to fall in or out of the temptation, God is giving me the grace to understand that I am making which ever decision with all these "people" watching, it changes everything.
It reminds you to ask for greater help.
When you remember that the Holy Spirit is with you, you will in turn remember that he is the helper, the counselor, the comforter (John 14:26 ) and you will ask him to help, comfort or counsel you.
When you remember that you have angels assigned with charge over you, you will remember that angels hearken to the Word of God (Psalms 103:20 ), so you will speak the Word of God concerning your situation for the angels to go to work.
It gives you rest.
Remembering this truth also gives your heart rest. King David says it like this:
Psalms 16:8-9
I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety.
It gives you joy.
Psalms 16:11
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.
