How to become an overnight success!

Image
Image borrowed from Maryam Sohail on WordPress There was a village of timber makers who used to make the best timber in the country; several people could travel from near and far to come and buy their timber. But they had only one challenge: the trees from which they made the timber were too hard for them to cut down using axes. It would take one man about 100 days to cut down just one tree. However, there was a strong wind that blew through the village every once in a while and could potentially blow down some of the trees. Most villagers planted these trees and waited upon the strong wind to blow them down instead of them having to cut them down. They waited and wished as they sat down drinking and fantasizing about all the money they would get if the wind blew down their trees. Unfortunately, the wind only blew down a couple of trees in the entire village every time it came. Mr. Kweza, one of the tree growers, picked his axe and decided to spend  his time trying to cut down a tree,

Handling bad news

Bad News | The New Yorker A girl had gone away from home to go to college, and while at college, she wrote her parents a letter that said, " Since I left for college, I've been remiss in writing, and am sorry for my thoughtlessness and not having written until now. But I'll bring you up to date now. But before you read on, please sit down. Are you sitting down? Don't read unless you're sitting down! Well, am getting along pretty well now, the skull fracture concussion that I got when I jumped out of my dormitory window when it caught on fire shortly after my arrival here, is pretty well healed. I only get those sick headaches that I've been having now once in a while instead of everyday. Fortunately, the fire in my dorm and the jump was witnessed by an attendant at the gas station. He ran over, took me to the hospital and continued to visit me there. When I eventually got out of the hospital, I had no where to live because of the burnt-out conditions of my room

Jesus' complete lesson on how we ought to pray

Image
Photo by Diana Simumpande on Unsplush.com I am quite convinced that the Lord's prayer as we know it is just a portion of Jesus' complete lesson on prayer. Luke 11:1-2    ...one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come... He continues to share with them the Lord's prayer as we (might) know it until verse 5, where my point for today is. He continues to tell them a story about a man who asks his friend for bread in the middle of the night and he's given that bread, not because of their friendship but because of his shameless audacity, his capacity to dare, to disturb his friend in the middle of the night. He also continues in verse 9 to tell us, "... ask, and it will be given to you;   seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."   I am convinced that Jesus' complete

You might be in a trap!

I have heard a lot of preachers explain this season of being alone, where your friends get fewer or they suddenly get distant for no particular reason. They often relate it to king David's story when he he'd been anointed as king, but he kept going back to be with his father's sheep in the field, to be prepared to shepherd God's people. Others relate it to Jesus story when he went to the desert to fast and be tempted before his ministry kicked off fully.  Preachers clearly explain that God may set us apart for a season or two, take away our friends, or distance them, to help us get to know him more, to spend more time with him before he releases us into his calling. Yet, it also stands out according to me, that sometimes that separation is not of God, but the devil's. The devil might separate us from people, godly people especially, so that he may "feast on us". You can't be alone, even when you try!

photo credit  Ever felt alone? This piece is a good read! I am that type of person who enjoys watching the behind-the-scenes video clips of most of my favorite movies. The very first few times I did so, I was amazed at the large number of people on every set, that we don't even ever get to see in front of the camera. Imagine with me a given part of a movie where the actor is alone, behind closed doors, maybe sobbing, or sleeping or dancing, but with no one else watching him/her. When you watch that scene, you can only see one person on your TV screen, you can only see that actor sobbing or dancing or doing whatever, yet when you get a chance to watch the behind-the-scenes clip of that particular scene, you will be amazed that there were at the very least five people: the director, a camera guy, the guy holding the long microphone and then the actor. With this habit of watching the behind-the-scenes video clips of my favorite movies, these days even before I watch the vi
